The Union Pacific Lokomotive

The Union Pacific 3985 or UP 3985 is a steam locomotive with a 4-6-6-4 wheel arrangement (meaning 6 + 6 cogs or CC series), a type of Challenger owned by Union Pacific Railroad.

The 3985 UP locomotive was made in 1943 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) Schenectady, New York. Currently, the UP 3985, dubbed the Challenger, is the largest steam locomotive operating in the world.

ALCO makes 105 of these locomotives for Union Pacific which is operated on mountainous trails in the California and Oregon regions.

The UP 3985 locomotive was designed by chief mechanical engineer Otto Jabelmann in 1941 and was part of the second order of the second version of the Challenger.

This design relies heavily on the latest experience with the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy locomotive and produces a locomotive weighing around 287,577.5 kg and accompanied by 2/3 load tenders which weigh 157,850.2 kg.

The initial goal of creating the Challenger class was to accelerate transport operations from west to east in steep Wasatch in Utah and western Wyoming.

Wasatch himself was conquered by the Big Boy Locomotive without help. Challenger and Big Boy emerged right when traffic increased in preparation for American involvement in World War II.

The Challenger has a power output of 5000 HP or 5000 horsepower, with a maximum speed of 70 mph or 110 km/hour

Challenger 3985 carried out the last routine assignment in 1957 and was retired in 1962 and then stored in Cheyenne’s roundhouse until 1975 and then carried out several repairs by UP volunteers so that in 1981 the Challenger 3985 dashed can be operated again.

This Challenger routinely draws a series of freight cars but sometimes also pulls a series of passenger cars. Challenger 3985 originally had a coal-fired combustion system equipped with coal tenders with a capacity of 32 tons, but in 1990 the Challenger 3985 was converted into a boiler with an oil fired boiler system.
